5 Best DIY Face Masks for Post-Workout

I don’t think anyone can reasonably argue that consistent, appropriate exercise is good for the body, mind and soul. Enjoying the sense of accomplishment after completing a good workout (especially one that I didn’t exactly feel like doing to begin with) is easily one of the best parts of my day. However, like the yin and the yang which comes with the good and the bad, so does my daily sweat session. Even though the workout is great for my body, the results in my pores and skin aren’t always awesome. I’ve found that the combination of sweat from my workouts and hot temperatures has me wrestling breakouts, dry skin and redness if I don’t take proper care of my skin. Just like the workout requires proper rest and recover, my skin seems to demand equal attention.

The good news is it doesn’t take much to restore my skin and pores, and most of the time, all I need to do is make sure to wash my skin properly right after working out, and treat it to a nice face mask in the evening once or twice a week. And here is the added bonus: there are plenty of options for masks that you can make for yourself at home. Sure there are expensive options that you can buy at the store, and there is a time for those too, but I love figuring out what I can create without having to pay. And usually with ingredients I already have on hand!

Before we get started, I wanted to note that wherever possible, try to use organic ingredients. It’s not required, but the skin on your face is some of the thinnest on your entire body, and will readily absorb any toxins present, which is not what we are going for! Additionally, for those vegans out there, any recipe that includes honey can be swapped out for a little banana puree or just omitted entirely.

So, without further ado, here are 5 of my favorite DIY facemasks that help to hydrate, condition and return the glow back to your skin after those awesome workouts.

Detox Mocha Magic

The health benefits of a good cup of coffee are hard to deny. More and more research comes out every year about the protective compounds found in coffee you can make at home, and luckily for us, it’s good for the skin, too! The caffeine found in coffee helps with taking down any swelling or puffiness, while the honey and yogurt help with detoxifying and moisturizing. This one is a personal favorite.

2 tablespoons freshly ground coffee

2 tablespoons pure cocoa powder

1 tablespoon honey

3 tablespoons yogurt

Blend everything together to a smooth consistency and apply to your skin. After that, you get to hang out and relax for 15 minutes. While your rinsing the mask off with warm water, take a few moments to massage the coffee grounds into your skin for some amazing exfoliation.

The Oatmeal Soother

This mask, and the oatmeal in particular, is excellent for soothing dry, enflamed skin and helping to alleviate breakouts. When you add the honey and yogurt, you have yourself a relaxing and revitalizing mask that takes your soothe-factor (I made that word up) into overtime!

1/3 cup instant or cold cooked oatmeal

1/2 cup hot water

1 tablespoon organic honey

1-2 tablespoons organic plain, unsweetened yogurt

If you are using instant, add the oatmeal to the water and give it some time to absorb and plump up.  After that’s done, add the honey and the yogurt and blend to bring it to a smooth consistency. Once it’s ready, apply generously to your face and relax for 10-15 minutes. When time is up, simply wash it off with warm water and pat your face dry.

Strawberry Lemon Lightning

When I use this mask, it feels like my face is drinking a delicious strawberry and lemon smoothie. The strawberries have salicylic acid in them which is found in many over the counter acne products, while the lemon juice leaves my skin feeling light and tight. Both the yogurt and honey posses strong antibiotic properties, and if there is any left over you can totally drink it!

1/4 cup mashed strawberries

2 tablespoons lemon juice

1 tablespoon yogurt

1 tablespoon honey

This one you are going to prepare a little differently. You want to mash the ingredients together well, but don’t put it into a blender. You want the final result to be spreadable and not drip off your face. Apply it to you skin evenly and let it sit for 10 minutes. After, rinse with warm water and pat your skin dry.

Honey and Avocado Moisture Mask

I love this mask for when my skin starts feeling really dry after using traditional cleansers. The coconut oil combined with the avocado really help to restore moisture to my skin, while the honey helps to heal any red areas that may be present. Since this mask only requires half of an avocado, you can save that for a snack later (I’m a big fan of snacks later!).

1/2 a very ripe avocado

2 tablespoons honey

1/2 teaspoon coconut oil

Mash all of the ingredient together at once until the mask is nice and creamy.  Apply to your face and let is sit for 10-15 minutes tops. After you’re done, simply wash or shower with warm water.

Papaya Antioxidant Age Reducer

The payapa in this mask is packed with skin boosting antioxidants which help to remove old, dead skin cells and leave your skin freaking glowing.

1/2 a ripe papaya (peeled, seeded, and sliced)

1/2 teaspoon honey

1/4 teaspoon lemon or lime juice

Puree just the papaya in a blender or food processor, and then mix in the rest of the ingredient by hand. Apply liberally to your face and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Once time is up, wash off the mask with warm water and marvel at your glowing skin in the mirror.
